Figuring out my life
Tonight we sat down with paper and pen and started to sketch out what I’m supposed to be doing with my life, since honestly I haven’t a clue. I left teaching and academics eight years ago and at the time I was young enough to say “I don’t know, I’ll do … THIS for a while and see what happens.” And then I got busy doing whatever THIS happened to be and I...

Oh man, this was a long day and I am tired.
But two things of note happened:
1. The person who told me my services were no longer needed at my part-time place of employment after the beginning of March seems to have forgotten that’s what she said. Apparently this is not an unusual occurrence, but it does leave me wondering whether she’ll want me to stick around after all. Either way, I’m still going to actively look for...

I really hate using Tumblr on my phone
You are not alone. I have had the WORST luck posting photos to Tumblr through the (iPhone) app. Error message after error message. It would take four or five tries to get it to work, and most of the time I didn’t bother after the second error message. And I’m one of those people who upgrade apps and stuff as soon as I can, so I know the problem wasn’t that I was using an old...
New Leap Day Tradition! Employers should apply to...
I think that should be a thing.

bewildered replied to your post: Rewatching Mad Men, “My Old Kentucky Home”
and the campbells tearing up the dance floor!! such a good episode.
So much going on in this episode! I’d totally forgotten about Sally stealing Grandpa Gene’s money, too.
So good.

Rewatching Mad Men, "My Old Kentucky Home"
AKA the one where Peggy smokes pot, Don meets Connie, and Betty meets Henry and OMG Henry is the SKEEZIEST. I had somehow forgotten this.
Also Joan plays the accordion and breaks my heart.

a Mad Men marathon would go nicely with a martini
Oh, that is an excellent idea. I need a refresher before the new season. (Which is marked on my calendar. What.)

You can always google Alexander Skarsgard — that’s my advice (for everything).
You know, growing up in Minnesota may have made me immune to the charms of most Scandinavian men, but …
I will grant that there is definitely something going on here that I very much respond to.
Free night: the possibilities are paralyzing
Dan’s off to see Van Halen (I was sorta schmeh on the idea of seeing them and said I would go if he couldn’t find anyone else to go with but of course he did, which is fine, because I was sorta schmeh on the idea of seeing them) and I don’t know what to do with myself. Can’t find anything I want to watch, don’t feel like making anything, I’m afraid of starting a...

Soooo … a little while ago I deleted my LinkedIn account. I hardly ever used it, only went there to click “ignore” on invites from people I didn’t know or who were clearly treating it like Facebook, and based on the people I was connected to, it wasn’t ever going to help me find the sort of work I wanted to do (lol whatever that is). Plus I think LinkedIn is super...

I'm having one of those mornings
I’m amazed I can remember how to walk.

styro replied to your post: One more thing
It’s the answer to the Ultimate Question of life, the universe, and everything, baby.
Exactly! Hence the need (requirement?) for a huge blowout party!
One more thing
I’m going to be 41 in exactly one month.
Sort of a meaningless number, isn’t it? I think instead of a party or whatever I’ll just start planning the huge blowout I need to have for my 42nd birthday.

Stuff in my head
1. I think it’s time I killed my long-form blog and stick to writing here, since it’s the first place I go when I want to publicly share anything.
2. That move will likely be temporary. I regroup every few years, and it’s time to do that again.
3. I sincerely hope my dry and puffy eyes are NOT due to an allergic reaction to the drugstore-bought face lotion I bought when my...

P.S.
I’m listening to “Africa” again.
“Hurry boy, it’s waiting there for you…”
An excellent plan
Dirty dishes have been accruing in the sink since the weekend, and I made myself promise this morning that I would clean them when I got home.
But then I really wanted a martini when I got home, too.
So I decided I would clean enough dishes and silverware to fill the dish rack to capacity, and then let them air dry while I mixed myself a drink.
I love it when a plan comes together.
(This of...

Truthful Tuesday
It’s taking a tremendous amount of willpower to not sing along to “Africa” right now.

when i see those color coded bookshelf photos, i wonder how the fuck they find anything. /worked in bookstore too long
Full disclosure: The shelves in our living room are organized sort of by color. It’s just my hardcovers with the jackets removed, and then my SRS LIT-TRA-CHURE marked-up paperbacks from Norton, Penguin, Oxford, etc. I don’t have many...
P.S.
This one time in graduate school I decided I was going to reorganize all my books according to date of publication.
After that I couldn’t find anything.

Random fact about me
I organize my DVDs alphabetically by director. It’s a thing I picked up from my dad, who used to tape movies off cable (on his BETAMAX) and then, eschewing the labels that came with the VHS tapes, would create his own label with one of those handheld label makers, with the movie title and the director’s last name on it, and then he would color code them according to some system I...

Followup to last night's post
I can’t believe I’d never seen Sneakers until last night. What a great movie! The kind of movie where, even if you guess how things are going to go, it’s still fun to watch them go that way, because it’s a smart movie with good actors.
On a related note, I’m contemplating starting a David Strathairn appreciation blog.
Must be a seasoned editor or savvy wordsmith who is also a firearms enthusiast.
– Description of a job for which I will not be applying.
I am watching Sneakers for the first time.
Holy crap EVERYONE is in this movie.

The book is so freaking good. I loved it.
It’s SO GOOD! The one quote about the “Total Eclipse of the Heart” video where it becomes clear that the people who came up with the concept were just totally wasted? Worth the price of the book, right there. That one quote. (Especially considering...
