dorkitude asked: Normally I have to buy dinner and drinks before even thinking about going near the askhole. So.... Your thoughts on the current state of the film industry?
Sweet. Mine’s a martini, by the way. And none of this “extra super dry just waft the vapours from an open bottle of vermouth over the gin” crap, it’s not a martini if there’s no vermouth. There. I HAVE SPOKEN.
What were we talking about? Right. I used to go to movies without any sort of discretion because I could afford it. Now that I’m severely underemployed I am much more selective and haven’t seen a movie in the theater since The Muppets, which a) my family paid for and b) I thoroughly enjoyed because I was its target demographic — someone who had grown up with the Muppets and understood all the old TV show references.
But my selectiveness has also led to a lack of interest, so I haven’t been paying much attention to the industry, but I think there’s an appalling lack of originality out there even among indie studios, I think women are still woefully misrepresented on screen and underrepresented in producing/directing/writing roles, and if anyone’s going to transform a canonical work of literature into a 3D movie, why in the world did they choose The Great Gatsby and not, say, Moby Dick? Though I will probably see Gatsby out of curiosity and because I like that novel very much.
(This is why no one asks me things.)
