Full disclosure: The shelves in our living room are organized sort of by color. It’s just my hardcovers with the jackets removed, and then my SRS LIT-TRA-CHURE marked-up paperbacks from Norton, Penguin, Oxford, etc. I don’t have many hardcovers so it’s not hard to find a particular one, and as for the rest all I have to remember is what edition I have of Great Expectations or Tom Jones, and frankly, that doesn’t come up very much anymore.
The books in my bedroom are organized by my patented “Just put this somewhere” method. Since I haven’t had to look for a book I’ve already read in a while, it works for me.
